OXFORD, MS (WLBT) - Ole Miss students voted 2,510 to 856 to start the process of finding a successor to the school's former mascot Colonel Reb.
Ole Miss has been the only school in the Southeastern Conference without a mascot since ditching Colonel Reb seven years ago.
It was part of an effort to rid the school of Old South stereotypes.
Tuesday afternoon they voted to pursue finding a new mascot rather than going without one.
Colonel Reb can't come back but some options that have been suggested include a riverboat gambler or a colonial soldier.
