JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - She's lived through World Wars I and II, and she was 59 years old when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. On Saturday, 106-year-old Virgia Bartee was honored at her alma mater, Jackson State University.
Surrounded by family and friends, Ms. Bartee accepted the special recognition at Jackson State's Alumni Council meeting and luncheon. The Canton resident graduated from Jackson State in 1955 and worked as a school teacher. We're told the feisty Ms. Bartee has never smoked nor drank, and she surrounds herself with young people to stay young at heart.
Her long-term memory is fairly sharp, especially for a poem she learned as a young girl.
"There is only admiration till the preacher makes oration, and I lie with snowy lilies on my brow," Bartee recited perfectly for us.
Also seated at Ms. Bartee's table was Lemarc Humphrey, J.S.U. student and hero. He came to the aid of instructor Andrea Scott when she was shot in the head on campus February 1.
