COPY-No charges filed against ex-animal control officer

Associated Press - February 28, 2010 5:14 PM ET

CANTON, Miss. (AP) - No criminal charges will be pursued against a former city animal control officer who had been accused of improperly dumping numerous animals.

District Attorney Michael Guest told The Clarion-Ledger affidavits must be signed by a Canton police investigator and turned in before a judge can issue an arrest warrant for Alonzo Esco on misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty and illegal dumping.

Canton Police Chief Vickie McNeill said she will not authorize her investigator to file the paperwork because no one saw any crimes occurring. McNeill said investigators "saw the end results of the crime," meaning they discovered more than 100 animal carcasses allegedly dumped by Esco in a creek.

McNeill says no further action will be taken.
