VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) - Police are investigating a store robbery and shootout that left one man dead.
A passing driver found the man's body under an overpass on Highway 61, just off Interstate 20, on Friday just after sunrise. Police say the man had been shot on the bridge and fell to his death.
Investigators say the shooting victim had robbed the La Chiquita store on Highway 61 with another man around 8:00 Thursday night. The patrons in the store were also robbed, and a clerk was assaulted in that incident.
The store owner apparently pursued the men down Highway 61, where they crashed, jumped out of the car, and starting shooting at the store owner with assault rifles. The store owner returned fire, striking both men. One fell of the bridge, and the other took off on foot and is still at large.
"We believe there's another suspect, his accomplice," said Assistant Chief Jeffery Scott of the Vicksburg Police Department. "We have not found him as of yet. We do have investigators checking the woodlines to see what additional evidence we can recover."
Police describe the man they're looking for as a hispanic male in his mid-20s to early 30s. Area hospitals have been notified to be on the lookout for people coming in with gunshot wounds.
The store owner is not being charged at this time. He was treated for minor injuries and released.
