JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - They were chipping away at something that is bound to be extraordinary.  Saturday woodcarvers from across Mississippi and Louisiana converged at the agriculture museum in Jackson for the 17th annual Pearl River Woodcarvers Guild show.  These skilled craftsmen demonstrated power carving and wood turning.  Then each piece is hand painted to perfection.  Some of the more detailed work can take a woodcarver more than a month to complete.  It all starts with a vision of what the carver wants to create.

"I'm not artistic so I couldn't sit down and draw the same things that I could carve.  But once I start carving them I can see them coming to life.  I can cut into them and eventually get what I'm planning to get," said Pearl River Woodcarvers Guild President John Harris.

Each piece was judged and put on display.  Tools, instruction books and some carvings were for sale.
