JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Deville Smith weaved between two defenders for a one-handed free-throw line jumper with two seconds left and Callaway beat crosstown rival Provine 34-32 for the Class 5A boys state championship.
It was the second state championship for Callaway (22-10), last year's 4A winner. The Rams (24-7) won 3 of 4 earlier games against Callaway this year, including the division title and the North State championship.
Smith made a jumper with 50 seconds left in the third quarter to put Callaway up by 14.
But Provine, which has six state titles, outscored Callaway 14-6 in the final quarter. Jalen Courtney made a layup with 52 seconds left to tie the game for the first time since the opening quarter.
Callaway got the ball and wasted 50 seconds before Smith's shot.
