I-55 reopens after 9 hours

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Interstate-55 Southbound, at Lakeland Drive in Jackson, has reopened. The highway was closed for 9  hours while crews worked to move a jackknifed 18-wheeler.

Sand is spread across that area of the interstate to cover the residue from 100 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled from one of the big rig's ruptured tanks. MDEQ said it could take several days for the area to return to normal, and caution drivers to drive carefully in the area.

The big rig jackknifed and ripped in half just after 2 a.m. between the Lakeland Drive and Woodrow Wilson exits. No other vehicles were involved and no one was seriously injured. We're told the driver was checked into St. Dominic's Hospital for minor injuries, and released.

The truck was carrying hundreds of boxes of frozen chicken. Crews worked to clear those boxes from the interstate, and from the big rig's trailer.

It belongs to G & C Trucking, from Forest, Mississippi.

Officials are still investigating what caused the wreck, but they say rainy weather may have been a factor.
