JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson police have made an arrest in the Monday night murder of Barry Odom. We talk with the victim's father about his hope for justice and the arrest of the man accused of gunning down his son.
Rev. Larry Odom is the father of three children. Two sons and a daughter. He lost his oldest son to murder Monday night.
"This has got to be devastating to you and your family. Yes it is. Very much so. But God is good and he has been holding us," said Odom.
36-year-old Barry Odom who was originally from Lena was found shot twice in the chest in this parking lot of the North Hill Square Apartments on Chastain Drive. His family wants to know why.
"My wife and I when we went into the apartment Tuesday we were just elated to find the scriptures he had out in the apartment," Odom said.
Jackson police have made an arrest in the case.
"They called and said they were close and that they had someone in mind," said Odom.
54-year-old Bryn Ellis is charged with murder. Ellis is also being charged with possession of a stolen firearm. Police found a weapon in his apartment that had been reported stolen. Odom's father said his son's life was also stolen.
"It hurts to know that this happened because I lost a son, it also hurts for him because of the fact that there has to be something in him that's not right for him to do that. You don't take something you can't give,"said Odom.
Barry Odom worked for a local paper company, and he sat with elderly patients. He was the father of an 11-year-old daughter.
"We tried to encourage him to go to be a doctor cause he was just that smart you know.. He was a CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant), here and he loved people, he didn't meet strangers," Odom said.
Police are not releasing a motive for Odom's murder, and they are not saying whether the weapon they found at Ellis' apartment was the weapon used in the shooting.
Funeral services for Barry Odom are set for Saturday at 11 A.M. in Lena.
