Pit bull owner may face manslaughter charges

HINDS COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - The Hinds County Sheriff's Department is stepping into new territory as it plans to pursue manslaughter charges against the person who owned a pit bull that killed a child.

Right now, They're awaiting test results on one dog that was put down, And another that's being held by animal control.

On February 12, six-year-old Anastasia Bingham was mauled to death by a dog outside her Terry home. Investigators believe a pit bull killed the girl.

WLBT news found a group of pit bulls in dog houses behind a neighboring home. It's believed the killer dog came from that group. No charges have yet been filed against the unnamed owner of the dogs.

The sheriff's department wants to press charges pursuant to a state statute, "homicide, owner of a vicious animal". The department has never pressed such charges before.
