CANTON, MS (WLBT)- It's been the backdrop to major motion pictures like 'A Time To Kill', and 'My Dog Skip'. Now the city of Canton is to be the permanent home of movie making in the state of Mississippi.
Canton is known as the city of lights. In the coming months you can add camera, action to that motto.
A Hollywood film studio is setting up shop in town, bringing along with them jobs, and more movies.
This week the Canton Film Office announced the creation of Mississippi Film Studios. The production company is moving into this building in the canton industrial park, where a sound stage will be built in the near future.
The business will be run by Roadtown Enterprises, a Los Angeles based film management agency.
Their job will be to draw filmmakers to the Canton area, to shoot their pictures.
"It was the building used in a Time To Kill. The opportunity came up for us to receive that building again, so we were building a purpose built stage, were going to now take this and it will be exactly what we would have built," says Canton Film Office Executive Director Jo Ann Gordon.
The future movie lot is owned by the Canton Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Mississippi Film Studios of Canton could employ up to 250 workers once film production gets underway.
In recent years the building was leased out to another company, but it will be transformed back into a film studio, starting sometime mid-April.
