Prom may go on after same sex controversy

Posted: Updated:

ITAWAMBA COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - The offers are pouring in to help a North Mississippi School have a prom after theirs was canceled.

Constance McMillen, a senior at Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, wanted to take her girlfriend to the prom. The district denied the request, then decided to cancel the prom altogether, saying it would be a distraction.

The Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition says it is leading efforts to organize a prom for all students  and a hotel owner in New Orleans has offered to hold an alternate senior prom. He says he'll provide transportation and hotel accommodations.

"We wanted to roll out the welcome mat and say 'Hey kids, the end of your high school experience should not be laced with negativity and public policy decisions and legal skirmishes, but rather a joyful time for you," said Sean Cummings of International House Hotel.

No word on if the hotel's offer has been accepted.
