HILTON HEAD, SC (NBC) - A walk on a South Carolina beach turned deadly for one man Monday. He was hit by a plane as it made an emergency landing.
This plane was heading to Virginia from Orlando when it had engine troubles and landed on Hilton Head Beach Monday night.
Authorities say the pilot tried to make it to the airport, but the plane started losing oil, so he decided to ditch it on the beach. The oil sprayed onto the windshield, obscuring the pilot's view.
Officials have not identified the bystander who was killed. They say he may have been unable to hear the plane's approach because it's engine had already shut down.
Neither person on the plane was injured.
