Jackson seeks budget cuts

JACKSON, MS (AP) - A city of Jackson official says that department heads are being asked to reduce their budgets to make up for lower tax collections.

While property tax figures are not yet in, the city is running between 12 and 15 percent behind on sales tax revenue, which makes up about a quarter of the city's $123 million general fund budget.

City spokesman Chris Mims said the city will not cut services, nor will it trim staff. He would not offer any other specifics.

But unless sales tax collections pick up, the sales tax deficit will grow to about $4 million by the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30. Mims said the city council will be briefed on the planned budget changes at Thursday's meeting of the budget committee.
