JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Tennessee Medical Examiner Dr. Bruce Levy has been fired. Department of Health Commissioner Susan Cooper said Wednesday afternoon she's taking immediate action to terminate his contract.

Dr. Levy is not a Tennessee state employee. He serves as state medical examiner under a contract with the state department of health.

Dr. Levy was arrested on drug charges at a Ridgeland hotel on Tuesday.

Jon Kalahar, spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said in a written statement that agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics were led to Levy after a routine search of packages and cargo with a drug dog. They found a package addressed to Levy containing less than an ounce of marijuana.

Once at Levy's hotel room, Kalahar says agents found several more small containers of marijuana.

In addition to serving as state medical examiner in Tennessee, Levy is CEO of Global Forensics and one of six doctors under contract for the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's office, according to Kalahar.

Earlier Tuesday, Levy was called as an expert witness during the sentencing phase of a Copiah County man who confessed to killing a Wesson pawn-shop operator. A WLBT crew was there covering the case when Levy took the stand.

Levy had an initial court appearance Wednesday morning in Madison County. He is now free on $25,000 bond.
