VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) - The Warren County Sheriff's Department and Vicksburg police are searching for an escapee. This escapee is also wanted for brutally beating a jailer.

It happened at 5:45 Wednesday morning. A jailer at the Warren County Jail in downtown Vicksburg was picking up laundry when Leon Bryant, 33, attacked him.

"As he opened the cell door the inmate that had actually brought him the laundry bag apparently leaped over the laundry bag and attacked the jailer, actually beat him down," said Sheriff Martin Pace. "The jailer was able to slam the door shut so as not to offer an escape for anyone else."

Bryant is from Warren County. He was picked up Tuesday evening and brought to the jail on an outstanding warrant for selling 40 dollars worth of cocaine to an undercover officer. Sheriff Pace said while he was not armed when he left the jail, he has proven he can be violent.

"He attacked a jailer to facilitate his escape," Pace said. "We actually have no reason to believe at this time he would be an immediate danger to the public."

There are surveillance cameras all around the jail. The last time Bryant was spotted he was actually running through a parking lot across the street.

"We're very undermanned in the jail," Pace said. "I have very few officers and a lot of inmates."

Sheriff Pace said anyone helping Bryant will also face charges.

"If we have anyone aiding and abetting a fugitive, whether they're an escapee or someone wanted on an outstanding warrant -- if you are deliberately assisting that person, you will be charged," Pace said.

In addition to the drug charge, Bryant will now be booked for assault and escape. The jailer was treated and released from a Vicksburg hospital.

If you have any information on Leon Bryant you can call the Warren County Sheriff's Department, or call Crimestoppers at (601) 355-TIPS.
