JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department of Health is reporting the state's second confirmed human case of West Nile virus this year.
The first case was reported last month in Coahoma County. The new case reported Thursday is in Winston County.
In 2009, Mississippi had 53 West Nile cases with four deaths.
Health officials say although West Nile numbers were lower in 2009 than in the previous year, they are not an indicator for the 2010 season.
State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier says it's important to remember that any disease spread by mosquitoes can occur in Mississippi all year long.
