Tupelo park loses tiger

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - Sal, a hulking Bengal tiger who would wow spectators with his size and antics at Buffalo Park and Zoo in Tupelo, has been euthanized after lengthy illness.

Park owner Dan Franklin tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that the tiger was 19 years old.

Franklin says federal officials wanted the tiger euthanized last year but he says Sal still had life in him.

Despite his progressive illness, Franklin says Sal continued to enjoy several more months at the Buffalo Park. He says the long, cold winter finally snuffed out the spark in Sal's eyes.

Dr. Sonya Bryan with All Animal Hospital in Tupelo euthanized Sal on Tuesday.

Franklin says Sal will be stuffed and put on display.
