JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A Jackson city councilman has officially thrown his hat into the ring to become a Hinds County circuit court judge. Judge Swan Yerger will leave the seat when he retires at the end of the year.
Ward one councilman Jeff Weill announced his candidacy Tuesday morning, pointing to his 28 years experience as a lawyer, a state prosecutor, and an investigator for the DA's office.
Weill would have to leave his seat on city council if elected. He says he's running to move the criminal justice system forward.
"Right now it takes many, many months or years for someone who's been indicted to be convicted or acquitted," said Weill. And I want to see that window shrink from years to as many short months as we can."
Jackson attorney Ashley Ogden is also reportedly considering a run for the judgeship.
