JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson Police Assistant Chief Lee Vance answered questions about the mistakes in the investigation into the fatal wreck caused by Karen Irby.  The Jackson Police Department has launched an internal investigation into what happened to cause the mistakes in the initial accident investigation.

The officer dispatched to the wreck on February 11, 2009 was specially trained in investigating fatalities, according to Assistant Chief Lee Vance. He said in light of these recent mistakes that officer will no longer be investigating fatal wrecks for JPD.

"If we find rather that there was some type of willful miscalculations made then we'll take appropriate action.  If we find that it was simply a mistake then we'll take whatever action is dictated by that.  That's why we're doing an investigation because we want to get to the bottom of it.  As we sit here and talk today I can't tell you absolutely 100% which way it is right now," said Assistant Chief Lee Vance.

A second investigation with a separate JPD investigator was launched and correct information was presented to the Hinds County District Attorney.
