
GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Retired Mississippi newspaper editor Merrit "Pic" Firmin has died at the age of 69.
The Sun Herald reports that Firmin died late Saturday at his Gulfport home after a long fight with cancer.
Firmin was managing editor of The Delta Democrat Times of Greenville, Miss., before becoming editor of The Sun and The Daily Herald and then, when the two Mississippi coast newspapers merged, executive editor of the Sun Herald.
Firmin gained a wide reputation for his journalism during Mississippi's Civil Rights era, with The Delta Democrat Times reporting intolerance and editorializing for change.
