JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A Jackson man refusing to stop for a seat belt violation led law officers on a two county, high speed chase.
MHP Trooper Eric Henry tried to stop Carnell Funchess on I-55 South in Crystal Springs when the pursuit began around 1:15 Monday afternoon.
Authorities say the 46 year old raced on winding roads on Highway 27 and in Copiah and Hinds Counties.
A 39-year-old female was also in the vehicle.
About 30 minutes into the chase the maroon SUV crashed in a ditch on Dry Grove Road in Raymond.
Funchess did not have a drivers license but would have only received a misdemeanor ticket if he had stopped.
"The trooper said he got up to about 85 miles per hour, had a couple of sets of stop sticks out but he avoided most of them until we got here close to Highway 18 and a trooper threw his stop sticks out and got him stopped here. He was arrested without incident," said Sgt. James Walker, of MHP.
Funchess will now be charged with felony fleeing, speeding and reckless driving.
He told troopers he did not stop because he did not want to go back to jail.
