PEARL, MS (WLBT) - Police arrested a Pearl couple Tuesday, and their children were placed in state custody after investigators found the home over run with animals and feces.
Pearl Police Chief Ben Schuler said 30-year-old Christopher Poe and his 26-year-old wife, Carrie Poe, were each charged with two counts of child neglect.
Their two under-aged children are in DHS custody.
Officers were initially called to Shelton Street Tuesday afternoon on the report of a toddler wandering in the middle of the street unattended.
Once the parents were located, police made a startling discovery inside the home.
Twelve cats and one dog were roaming inside the house which Chief Schuler described as being filled with trash and animal waste.
"There was a foul smell, large amounts of animal feces, urine, unsightly unlivable conditions in the house, just an awful smell," said Schuler.
The Poes are being held under $2,500 bond each.
