JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The training center for the men and women sworn to protect and serve the capital city will be getting some much needed improvements in the near future.

Wednesday morning the Jackson Chamber of Commerce presented a check for over $106 thousand to the Jackson Police Foundation and the JPD Command Staff.

The money was raised through a fundraiser held last fall to benefit the police department.

The donation will be used to make improvements to the officer training facilities. The building was built back in the 60s. Over time, many of the rooms have become aged and outdated.

Mayor Harvey Johnson accepted the donation from the chamber saying, "They are in fact committed not only to making Jackson safe but making sure the citizens of Jackson feel safe so we appreciate the work they do day in and day out. We have some dedicated men and women in the department, most of whom, but not all, come through this facility."

Rainwater has leak into the gym and other rooms at the training academy. The water has caused heavy damage to the floors which need to be replaced. Part of the funds will also go to buy new equipment for their weight room.
