Census forms left near the street

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Complete with a hamburger lunch and music, the 2010 Census Awareness Party behind the Hinds County Courthouse Thursday served as a gentle reminder to mail your Census form in.  It also served as a way to spread the word that the federal government will be mailing out forms up until April 12th.

"What they're wanting us to do is really wait," says Hinds County Census Coordinator Sharon Sims.

In other words, don't be concerned about the absence of your Census form until around April 20th. Until that time, you may still be getting mailings with further information.

But Mary Jane Cain of Utica is plenty concerned. For a different reason.

Two weeks ago, she picked up a white piece of paper at the end of her long driveway.  Turns out, it was her Census form.  She says her neighbors have similar stories. Some had their forms hand-delivered, but others found their forms blowing about near the street.

Cain's niece lives two doors down, in a house on a hill.  She says her niece never even found her Census. There's a mailbox by the street, but the driveway is on the side of the house.

"I know how important the Census is, having looked up Census records for various organizations I wanted to join, and trying to prove your lineage," Cain says.  "Makes us think it wasn't as important as they tried to tell us it was."

Census coordinators are surprised too. "We've not received any calls of that nature, but we would like for individuals to report that to our office so we can communicate that back to the regional office, make sure that's not happening," Sims says.

"They shouldn't be doing that," says Willie DeBerry, Partnership Coordinator with the Census 2010 Dallas Regional Census Center.  "If anyone did that, our folks should know that.  They will be dealt with accordingly.  They should take it straight to the door."

If you have questions or concerns about your 2010 Census, call the Hinds County regional office at 601-968-1900 or the Dallas Regional Service Center at 214-637-9682.
