JACKSON, MS (WLBT)- A grocery store clerk is recovering at a Jackson hospital after being shot during a robbery attempt. It happened Thursday night in front of Black's grocery on South Drive.

Jackson Police investigators are calling this a senseless act of violence.

Fifty nine year old Kacharabhai Patel was taking the days earnings from the store to the trunk of his car just before eight last night, when he was approached by two black men. The men who were wearing black masks over their face demanded the money in his trunk.

When Patel refused, he was shot in the stomach. The men fled empty handed.

Patel was taken to university medical center, where he remains in critical condition tonight.

Jackson Police Spokesman Officer Joseph Daughtry says, "Here's a business owner, trying to help in the community, and some people wanna try and rob him. We wanna get these guys off the streets, were still in the process of conducting the investigation. Detectives are still out there talking with individuals in the neighborhood to see if someone may have heard anything."

No arrests have been made in this case.

Jackson Police are asking anyone with any information on the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 355-8477.
