579th engineering detachment headed to Afghanistan

VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) - A special ceremony was held Friday for a group of soldiers and civilians being deployed to Afghanistan. 

The 579th Engineer Detachment (FEST-M) with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in Vicksburg will soon be leaving for the Middle East. 

Friends and family members were on hand to wish them good luck on their mission. 

The Forward Engineer Support Team-Main is comprised of 36 members. This group is made up of electrical, mechanical, civil, environmental and other engineering disciplines. 

"The men and women in front of you will provide the technical engineering, planning, design, contract management, environmental and geospatial engineering support as well as real estate acquisition and disposal," said Brigadier General Michael Walsh, Commander of the Mississippi Valley Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. 

 The 579th Engineer Detachment (FEST-M) will spend 1 year helping to rebuild Afghanistan.
