MADISON, MS (WLBT) - Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler is demanding a forensic audit of engineering projects done in her city by Madison County Engineer Rudy Warnock.
This request comes after an independent audit done on Warnock that claimed to find discrepancies in how much he was charging for his work.
The audit was done by hired engineer Richard McAfee of Florida. In his report, he claimed to have found multiple instances of excessive charges to the city of Madison, and questionable payments to the Warnock and Associates Engineering Firm.
After examining the report, Mayor Hawkins Butler says she believes Warnock subcontracted much of the work out for a lower fee. She also accuses Warnock of redesigning road projects, simply to increase his profit.
"Lets look at what the markup is, let's see if they are in line with what's in the contract. If there is nothing there on farming out all of this work, then I will be the first one to apologize to Rudy Warnock," says Hawkins.
During a press conference Monday, Warnock denied Mayor Hawkins Butler's accusations, and demanded she give him an apology.
"The Mayor of Madison is not an engineer, she doesn't understand standard engineering practices, she doesn't understand the process. For her to make allegations, that somehow or another I have marked up or modified a project to profit, is absolutely ludicrous."
Warnock says over 75 percent of the contracts he obtains are done in house. He also claims that his rates have been proven to be competitive, through an audit done by state officials earlier this year.
