Hattiesburg Zoo turns 60

HATTIESBURG, MS (WLBT) - The Hattiesburg Zoo celebrated its 60th birthday this weekend.

City officials and the community marked the occasion with a "Birthday Bash." The attendees sang happy birthday and cupcakes were handed out. Special gifts were also provided for many of the zoo's animals.

The zoo officially opened on Easter Sunday, April 9th, 1950.

"This year is going to be a splash park for the little kids. We're going to have other pavilions that are going to be opening up and other venues with other animals. Hopefully in the very near future, we'll have accreditation, with a quarantine that we'll open up. So, we're excited about the future of the zoo," said Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny Dupree "birthday bash" was held in conjunction with the Hattiesburg Zoological Society's "Zoo Blues."
