ARGENTINE TOWNSHIP, MI (NBC) - A Michigan mother and her boyfriend are behind bars following the brutal beating death of the woman's 4-year-old son.
Police say the little boy endured unthinkable torture. The preliminary investigation found the boy may have been beaten over a 24-hour period.
Police responded to his home after a concerned relative called for help.
By the time crews arrived police say 4-year-old Dominick Calhoun had injuries to his entire body. They rushed him to the hospital, but he died Monday morning at 11:02 when doctors took him off life support.
"He said the mom's boyfriend was stepping on his head," said neighbor Patty Brown as she described what she says the victim's 8-year-old brother told her happened to his brother.
She says she spoke with him as police secured the scene.
"He was stomping on his head, and kicking him in the ribs, punching him in the face," Brown said.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says Dominick's mother and her boyfriend Joshua Hayes are in the Genesee County Jail, but have not yet been charged with the crime.
Argentine Township Police Chief Daniel Allen says police are still investigating, searching for witnesses, and waiting for autopsy results.
Neighbors are left wondering if they could have prevented it. Several people heard disturbing noises from the apartment in the hours before police arrived.
"I thought they were just throwing things around. I didn't know they were up there with the little boys," said one neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous. "If I would have known, I would have called the police at least."
