ITAWAMBA COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A lesbian teenager who challenged her school district's ban against same-sex prom dates will now serve as the grand marshal at an annual gay pride march in New York City.
Heritage of Pride, which is organizing the parade, announced Constance McMillen's scheduled appearance for the event which is set for June 27.
McMillen's attorney and ACLU Mississippi legal director Kristy Bennett confirmed that McMillen would attend.
The march commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots in which patrons at a Greenwich Village gay bar fought back against a police raid.
McMillen said she's honored to be part of the celebration.
