Suspected burglar shot by off-duty officer

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - An off-duty Jackson police officer has suffered minor injuries following a shootout with a suspected car burglar. It happened just after 1:00 Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of Tennessee Commercial Warehouse at 4315 Industrial Drive.

Police say the officer spotted a suspicious person walking through the parking lot. When the officer identified himself the suspected car burglar pulled out a gun and began firing at the officer. The officer and a passenger in his car returned fire, striking the man multiple times.

The man, identified as 24-Year-Old Fabian Chapman was taken away in an ambulance. Police could not give us his condition. The officer received a laceration to his hand from glass that was broken out of his SUV during the shootout.

Police say Chapman has a criminal history, and will be charged with several counts of burglary, felon in possession of a firearm, one count of aggravated assault, and assault on a police officer.

Investigators say they found several stolen items in a vehicle Chapman was driving.
