A resident in a Belhaven apartment complex chased a burglar and shot him in the leg, according to police.
Jackson police said 42-year-old Johnny Washington broke into apartment 4 just after 5 o'clock Friday morning at a complex at 1334 Jefferson Street.
A resident said Washington spilled beer inside the apartment, then tried to steal a bow and arrow and a jump box used to start a car.
The resident didn't want to speak on camera, but said his roommate chased Washington out to the sidewalk and shot him in the right thigh.
A witness said Washington appeared to be drunk, but didn't appear to be armed. He said the tenant fired two warning shots before shooting Washington in the leg.
According to police, Washington made a "threatening gesture" toward the resident.
Police said Washington was treated at UMC for non-life threatening injuries and taken into custody. He is charged with house burglary.
The resident said he and his roommate had been living in the apartment building for about three months. The Overby Company handles leasing for the building, which did not appear to have a name.
Police are still investigating the incident.
