JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A healthier you and a healthy planet was the purpose of a first time event in downtown Jackson.  President Street in front of city hall was blocked off for the first Green Week kick off Earth Day celebration.

The Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership invited all metro residents to participate in a 5k run in the cool of the evening.   Families could also climb a rock wall, listen to live music and donate old running shoes and T-shirts to SolesFSouls.  The gently worn clothing will be given to people in need.

"When you have kids you start thinking about their future and what they are going to have after we're gone.  We have to do that for future generations.  It's the responsible thing to do. We have a beautiful place to live and we all need to take part and be responsible to keep it that way.  Because then in turn we live a healthier life because if we have a healthy planet we have a healthy life," said Program Director for GJCP Kellye Smith.

Health and nutrition experts were also on hand to guide people to better options to achieve good health.
