MONTICELLO, MS (WLBT) - The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department investigated the death of one of their own this weekend.

Sheriff Joel Thames said Deputy Tommy Kirkland died in a one car accident on Forest Grove Road near Monticello around 12:25 a.m. Saturday.

Investigators said Kirkland was off duty and in his personal vehicle at the time of the crash.

The 53-year-old had been in law enforcement since the late 70's working for the Monticello Police Department and Lawrence County Sheriff's Department.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
