JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - It was a violent weekend in the capital city. It started late Friday night with an officer involved shooting and then a drive by shooting that injured one man. Two shootings occurred Sunday morning ending with one man dead and a woman injured.
Residents on Willow Way said there were too many shots fired just before 5:00 a.m. Sunday.
"Gunshots went off. I heard about I don't know how many it was. Then it stopped. Then I heard about two or three more. Then it stopped. Then I didn't hear anything else," said Randy McCullum.
It happened in the 2000 block of Willow Way in south Jackson. The gunshots woke McCullum from his sleep, but a knock at the door from his neighbor got him out of bed.
"She couldn't hardly talk because she was shot in the mouth so she couldn't say nothing," said McCullum.
Jackson Police are not identifying the woman who suffered gunshot wounds to her shoulder, elbow and hands. Bullet holes line the front porch of her home and the SUV parked in the driveway. Nearby residents assisted officers in finding the male victim who had fled to a neighbors back yard.
"All I could see was him lying this was, he was on the bikes and he was face down," said the homeowner who did not want to be identified.
The unidentified man was shot in the chest and died on scene. Police describe the gunmen as two black males dressed in dark colored clothing. They fled the scene in a dark colored sedan.
An hour later Jackson Police pulled over a vehicle on Warner Avenue. The driver, 30-year-old Jerome Heard, had warrants out for his arrest for outstanding fines in Jackson. When the officer tried to make the arrest a struggle began. Police said Heard punched the officer in the face and attempted to take his weapon. The officer fired several shots then Heard fled the scene. He was later apprehended blocks away on Overbrook Drive. Heard faces multiple charges including assault on a police officer.
As is standard procedure, the officer involved in that shooting has been placed on administrative leave during an internal investigation. Jerome Heard is being held at the Hinds County Detention Center.
