JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The next time you drive through a construction zone, be sure to slow down and obey the speed limit.
That's the message from the Mississippi Development Authority and the Mississippi Department of Transportation, as they kick off their "Go Orange" campaign. It's part of national work zone safety day; an effort to reduce crashes and fatalities in work zones.
Federal highway officials estimate there is one work zone fatality every ten hours, and one work zone injury every 13 minutes.
"I want to urge all of you and plead with you to pay attention to work signs. Forget the phone call, forget the hamburger, the makeup, the newspaper you're trying to read while you're driving. Forget those things and pay attention" said Willie Huff, MDOT's Director of Enforcement.
MDOT's headquarters in downtown Jackson will be lit in orange lights, to signify the Go-Orange campaign and to remind drivers to use caution.
