Seven month-old dead after accidentally left in car overnight

Posted: Updated:

ANTIOCH, CA (NBC) - A 7-month-old Antioch, California baby was found dead Sunday after her parents, each thinking the other had the child, left her in the car overnight, Antioch police said Monday.

Police went to the parking lot of In Shape Health Club at 4099 Lone Tree Way shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of an unresponsive infant that had been left in her car seat overnight. Arriving officers found the baby dead inside the family car.

The Contra Costa County coroner's office has identified the child as Sofia Wisher. It was not immediately clear if the child died of heat exposure or exposure to the overnight cold.

The distraught parents told investigators that they both work two jobs and each parent thought the other had the baby, police said. In fact, Sofia had been in the car in the driveway of the family's home in Antioch since about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The next morning, the father woke up and went to the gym. When the mother awoke and checked on her children, she discovered that Sofia was not in her crib. She called the gym where her husband was working out and gym staff tracked him down.

He ran outside to his car, where he found his daughter dead in her car seat. T

he county's Children and Family Services department was notified and the couple's 2-year-old child was taken into protective custody while police investigate the baby's death.

The low temperature Saturday night in Antioch was 52 degrees and the high temperature Sunday was 78 degrees.

The coroner's office has not yet determined an official cause of death.
