CLINTON, MS (WLBT) - The Hinds County Sheriff's Department is investigating a disturbing case of child abuse in Clinton.

The little girl injured is identified as one-year-old Komara Wooten. Investigators said she was burned by her father, who placed her in a tub full of hot water.

Thirty-one-year-old Jerry Lamont Wooten of Clinton was arrested last Friday and charged with one count of felony child abuse. He was in Hinds County Court Tuesday for his initial appearance.

The sheriff's department said the abuse happened at the Shadow Brook Apartments in Clinton last Monday. Wooten was taking care of his daughter Komara Wooten, and her twin sister, when the one-year-old suffered second degree burns to the lower half of her body.

Wooten told investigators he placed the baby in the water, but said he didn't realize it was too hot.

Captain Steve Pickett of the Hinds County Sheriff's Department said, "I mean this is just so horrible. There isn't a lot of room to say this was an accident but were gonna leave it up to the court system, the grand jury and a trial to determine guilt and innocence in this case."

Komora Wooten is recovering at the Georgia Burn Center.

Jerry Wooten's bond was set at $25,000 by Judge William Barnett. Wooten does not have a criminal history. His case will be presented to the next Hinds County grand jury.

Wooten is the father of five children. The Hinds County Sheriff's Department said their investigation is ongoing.
