Calhoun Co. man convicted for killing cyclist

Posted: Updated:

CALHOUN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A Calhoun County man faces up to 33 years in prison after being convicted of killing a bicyclist while driving under the influence of morphine.

A federal jury convicted 58-year-old Wendell Blount on Friday on charges of driving while impaired and killing Esther Hageman while doing so.

The Dutch journalist was hit by Blount's SUV on the Natchez Trace near Houston on April 22, 2009. Blount testified that he had seen a cyclist in the distance but was checking his vehicle's mirrors when he hit Hageman from behind. The case was in federal court because the Trace is federal property.
