JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Fire officials are investigating a morning blaze that tore through a Jackson house Tuesday morning.
It happened just after 7:30 AM at 3437 West Capitol Street in Jackson.
Officials said Chris Martin was inside the abandoned home when the fire broke out. They said Martin escaped through an upstairs window and a neighbor, Rodney Spears, helped him down from the carport.
Firefighters were unsure if there were any injuries.
Neighbors said the fire puts a spotlight on the number of abandoned houses in the area.
"In this whole area, I'd say there are over 50 homes with people running in and out of them, doing all kinds of crazy stuff in them. It's a big problem," said Kortney Lotts, who has lived in the neighborhood for about 25 years and said he has seen blighted homes bring down the community.
"I would like to encourage the city to do more about the abandoned houses around here," added Lotts.
"Whenever you have abandoned structures in a neighborhood, it's always a potential for a fire hazard," said Division Chief R.D. Simpson of the Jackson Fire Department.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the blaze.
