JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Participants of Wednesday's Worker Memorial Day Rally at the State Capitol say no one should have to die to make a living.
Organizers said thousands of workers die on the job each year.
This year's theme focused on demanding criminal prosecution of employers who violate the state's compensation law.
Under current legislation, injured employees get 450 weeks of coverage.
President and Secretary-Treasurer of Mississippi's AFL-CIO Robert Shaffer said those benefits are not enough.
"So, we need to get down to the bare facts about it. If they would fix the workplace safety violations, we wouldn't be up here hammerin'...tryin' to get more benefits," said Shaffer.
The event was held by the Mississippi Workers' Center for Human Rights.
