NATCHEZ, MS (WLBT) - A day of fishing turned deadly when Adams county man drowned after his boat capsized.

Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said 58-year-old Walter Patterson drowned in a friend's private pond Saturday morning not far from Natchez.

Deputies were called to the scene around 9:45 a.m. and found his body lying at the edge of the pond.

Investigators said Patterson and his wife Mary Ann were fishing on State Park Road not far from their home.

She told deputies that after the boat overturned, she made it to shore and began screaming for help.

A passerby heard her and went into the water where Patterson had re-surfaced.

He was pulled to shore, but it was too late.

Officials said he had been under water for over an hour.

Neither wore life jackets.

Patterson's drowning is described as an accident.

Sheriff Mayfield stressed the need to wear floatation devices any time you are on the water, especially with temperatures getting warmer and with more people participating in outdoor activities.
