Inaugural downtown Cinco de Mayo celebration kicks off

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Downtown Jackson is holding a Cinco de Mayo celebration Wednesday night.

The inaugural event will be held at Club Dreamz on Capitol Street and will include performances by blues artists, mariachi bands, and local DJs.  Mexican food will be available for purchase well.

The first event of its kind in downtown Jackson, the event is organized by the Downtown Neighborhood Association, the Jackson Free Press, and the Jackson Progressives.

Organizers hope it becomes an annual event.

"The buzz around this has been pretty incredible, so I'm pretty sure this won't be the only time we do it.  There have been a lot of people who have contacted me over the past month and a half or so.  We've started to build this up, and I think we're going to have a really good, diverse crowd here tonight.  It should be a lot of fun,"said Matt Eichelberger, member of the Downtown Neighborhood Association.

The celebration begins at 5:30 PM.  Admission is free until 9:00 PM.
