ON THE GULF OF MEXICO (AP) - A 100-ton containment box is close to being in place over a blown-out well that continues to spew out oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
The device will be in position over the well soon.
Late Thursday, a crane lowered the containment vessel, which is designed to collect as much as 85 % of the oil and funnel it up to a tanker.
oil giant, BP, is in charge of cleaning up the mess.
The company was leasing a drilling rig that ended up exploding 50 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico.
The spill has already reached the mouth of the Mississippi River.
Officials forecast the slick could reach the Barrier Islands in the next few days.
