JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Gov. Haley Barbour has asked the Obama Administration to declare six north Mississippi disaster areas following severe weather that killed six in the state.
A declaration would give residents and business owners access to federal government assistance programs.
The severe weather system spawned two tornadoes and heavy rain on May 1-2. Several homes and businesses were destroyed or suffered major damage in Alcorn, Benton, Lafayette, Tippah and Tishomingo counties. Prentiss County also was impacted by the storms, according a news release from Barbour's office.
