FOREST, MS (WLBT) - A former Belhaven University baseball player was arrested Sunday, accused of killing someone just after graduation.
It happened on private property in Scott County Saturday night. Just hours after receiving his diploma and a degree in business, Scott County investigators say 22-year-old Joe Patterson shot and killed 28-year-old Michael Guy.
It happened at 3:30 Sunday morning at a property off Highway 481, south of Morton, which is owned by Jim Marler.
"It appeared there were no arguments going on. There was nothing that anyone at the gathering thought would spark this off and that Patterson walked behind the victim and fired once," said Scott County Sheriff Mike Lee.
Patterson who is charged with murder told witnesses he blacked out and couldn't remember firing the fatal shots. He's refused to answer any questions to investigators.
Several shots were also fired at people at the gathering, but no one else was hit.
Lee saID, "All their friends, it's hard for them to believe this occurred. It's hard for them to see him in this light. they just never thought that something like this would occur."
Lee saID he has no criminal history, and those at the gathering are being questioned. Bond was denied for Patterson during his initial appearance Monday. His case will be presented to the next Scott County grand jury this summer.
