JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The last person to serve as Mississippi's Public Land Commissioner has died.
John Ed Ainsworth served in the position from 1976 to 1980.
Ainsworth worked to make 16th section lands more profitable for school districts.
He called for the abolishment of the post to make government more efficient.
The duties of land commissioner were folded into the Secretary of State's office in 1980.
A memorial service will be held for Ainsworth Thursday in Madison.
He was 66 years old.
