Judge rules teen can stand trial on murder

BRANDON, Miss. (AP) - A judge has ruled that a Morton teenager's murder trial can proceed.

Rankin County Judge William Chapman denied a defense motion Tuesday to suspend the trial of 17-year-old Martez Harris because of the teen's alleged incompetency.

Harris is accused in the 2009 drive-by shooting death of Ricky Harvey Jr., a Brandon High School student.

An evaluation conducted by a doctor concluded Harris was not insane at the time of the shooting.

Harris is set to be tried May 18. His attorney, Bill Townsend, said he plans to file additional motions.

Two others defendants received 20 years after pleading guilty to accessory to murder and a third is awaiting trial.
