JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - This is National Police Week. And throughout the week, WLBT has brought you reports of various ceremonies honoring fallen law enforcement officers.
A memorial Thursday morning paid tribute to the sacrifice of Jackson police officers.
The monument at JPD headquarters is engraved with the names of thirteen officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Family, friends and fellow officers gather each year to honor the memory of fallen officers as a community.
"I think it's the most wonderful thing in the world, because they put their lives out every day," said Sandra Buckley Pruitt. "And I think it's great they honor them this way."
JPD Chief Rebecca Coleman said, "Although we are left behind, we understand they gave up their tomorrows to make sure we are here today."
Following the memorial, an appreciation luncheon was held, where officers and sheriff's deputies were presented with "Top Cop" awards.
