PARCHMAN, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has denied clemency for Gerald James Holland, clearing the way for the state's second execution in two days.
Holland, now 72, was sentenced to death in 1987 for the rape and murder of 15-year-old Krystal King of Gulfport. He is the oldest death-row inmate in Mississippi.
He is scheduled to be executed shortly after 6 p.m. CDT Thursday at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.
Paul Everette Woodward was put to death by lethal injection Wednesday for the 1986 rape and murder of 24-year-old Rhonda Crane of Escatawpa.
These are the first back-to-back executions in Mississippi in half a century.
